5-Day Mount Kilimanjaro Climb via the Marangu Route

A five-day Marangu route from the rainforest at Marangu Gate through Mandara, Horombo and Kibo huts to the Uhuru Peak summit attempt and descent.

Programme

Day by day

The climbing programme begins and ends in Arusha. The included shuttle between Nairobi and Arusha connects to it and is not one of the trekking days.

Day 1
Arusha to Mandara Hut
Drive to Kilimanjaro National Park, register at the gate and walk through rainforest to Mandara Hut at about 2,740 metres. Expect 7 kilometres and 4-5 walking hours, with a possible side trip to Maundi Crater.
Day 2
Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Leave the rainforest for open moorland and continue to Horombo Hut at about 3,700 metres. Expect 11 kilometres and 6-8 walking hours.
Day 3
Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Cross the saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi to Kibo Hut at about 4,700 metres. Expect 10 kilometres and 6-8 walking hours.
Day 4
Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak and Horombo Hut
Begin around midnight for the crater rim and Uhuru Peak, then descend via Kibo Hut to Horombo Hut. Expect 4 kilometres up, 14 kilometres down and 10-15 hours.
Day 5
Horombo Hut to Arusha
Descend through moorland and forest via Mandara to Marangu Gate, then transfer to Arusha. Expect 18 kilometres and 5-7 walking hours.
