Arusha → Tarangire

An elegant start in baobab country

Begin in Arusha and travel to Tarangire National Park, crossing the Maasai steppe to reach one of northern Tanzania's most distinctive landscapes. Giant baobabs rise above the bush and elephant herds gather along the river, with buffalo, giraffe and zebra often nearby. Enjoy an afternoon game drive with your guide before settling into your lodge for the evening, an unhurried start to the journey.

Day 2

Tarangire → Serengeti

To the endless plains

Travel via the Ngorongoro highlands to the Serengeti, crossing the crater rim and descending past Maasai grazing lands onto the open plains. Game viewing begins as you enter the park. Your lodge location and daily routes will be chosen to suit the season and the position of the migration herds, so the next days can be spent where the wildlife is most rewarding.

Day 3

Serengeti National Park

Unhurried days on the plains

Spend a full day exploring the Serengeti with your guide, following the herds when they are nearby, or seeking out the lions, leopards and cheetahs that live on the plains all year. A full day in the park means there is time to linger at the best sightings. Lunch can be taken in the bush, with time to rest at your lodge between drives.

Day 4

Serengeti National Park

Balloons, kopjes and rivers

An optional sunrise balloon flight (extra cost) is a memorable way to see the Serengeti's scale. The rest of the day is for exploring further — granite kopjes, river valleys and open plains — at your own pace. Your guide will look for leopards in the trees along the rivers and for cheetahs on the open grassland, adapting the route to what the day brings.

Day 5

Serengeti → Ngorongoro

Towards the crater

After a final morning on the Serengeti, travel east to the Ngorongoro highlands, stopping at Olduvai Gorge if you wish. The road climbs from grassland into forested hills, and the air cools noticeably. Arrive at your lodge in time to enjoy the view across the caldera in the late afternoon light, ready for a morning on the crater floor before the flight to the coast.

Day 6

Ngorongoro Crater → Arusha → Zanzibar

Crater floor, then the coast

Descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a morning game drive among black rhino, lion, buffalo and the crater's many grazers, a fitting finale to the safari. Then drive to the airstrip or Arusha for your flight to Zanzibar, and transfer to Zuri Zanzibar on the island's north-west coast. The contrast between the crater highlands and the Indian Ocean makes this one of the journey's most memorable days.

Day 7

Zanzibar

Warm water and white sand

A day at leisure on Zanzibar's coast. Swim in the warm Indian Ocean, relax on the beach, or ask the resort about snorkelling and sailing trips along the reef. After the early starts of safari, this is time to unwind at your own pace, with the white sand and turquoise water a complete change from the plains and crater of the past week.

Stone Town or the reef

Spend the day as you choose: a guided visit to historic Stone Town, with its narrow lanes, carved doors and markets; a spice tour through the island's plantations; a boat trip to a sandbank; or simply more time by the sea. Your planner can arrange excursions in advance, so the day fits the pace you want.

Day 9

Zanzibar

A final beach day

Enjoy a last full day on the island — perhaps a sunset dhow cruise or a leisurely lunch overlooking the ocean — before your final night at the resort. It is a good moment to look back over the journey, from Tarangire's baobabs and the Serengeti's plains to the Ngorongoro Crater and the Indian Ocean coast.

Zanzibar → departure

Farewell to Tanzania

After breakfast, check out and transfer to Zanzibar airport for your onward or international flight.
