Day 1

Nairobi → Samburu

North through the highlands

Your East Africa safari starts in the morning with a drive to Kenya's northern circuit through the undulating central highlands, with their forests and plantations. Stop on the equator line for photographs and an explanation of its significance. Samburu National Reserve is home to rare species such as reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra and Beisa oryx, and its arid landscape supports elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard and cheetah.

Day 2

Samburu National Reserve

The arid plains at sunrise

After breakfast at your lodge, head into the bush as the sun rises. Giraffes wander between the trees and elephants wade in the shallows of the Ewaso Ng'iro River. With luck you may see Samburu's special species — Somali ostrich, Beisa oryx, gerenuk and Grevy's zebra — and at Shaba, the endangered Williamson's lark. After a picnic lunch, game viewing continues into the evening.

Day 3

Samburu → Aberdare National Park

Waterhole viewing in the forest

Take a short morning game drive in Samburu, then head for the Aberdare highlands. The park is densely forested, so wildlife is best watched from your lodge's balconies overlooking a waterhole. Elephants often arrive to drink, and rarer sightings include giant forest hog, bongo, genet and serval. Black rhino, spotted hyena, colobus monkeys, buffalo and leopard also live in the forested ravines.

Day 4

Aberdare → Lake Nakuru

Through Kenya's beautiful landscapes

Leave the Aberdare range behind and travel through the highlands to Lake Nakuru National Park. The park is known for its birdlife and as a rhino sanctuary, home to black and white rhino and Rothschild's giraffe, with euphorbia forest and yellow acacia woodland. Enjoy a short game drive or relax in the cool, peaceful surroundings.

Day 5

Lake Nakuru → Maasai Mara

Morning on the lake, then the Mara

After an early breakfast, enjoy a morning game drive in Lake Nakuru. Flamingos may line the alkaline lake's shores, eagles soar overhead, and storks and pelicans wade in the shallows. Rhinos emerge from the bush, and buffalo and giraffe stand among the trees. Then drive to the Maasai Mara, with a short game drive on arrival if time allows.

Day 6

Maasai Mara National Reserve

A whole day on the Mara

Spend a full day exploring the Mara's vast plains, a haven for big cats. Cheetah, elephant, buffalo and zebra are often prominent, while antelope, warthog and wildebeest are present in large numbers. After a picnic lunch, venture towards the Mara River, with its crocodiles and hippos — the crossing point for migrating herds in season.

Day 7

Maasai Mara → Amboseli

A long, scenic journey south

After an early breakfast and a short game drive, travel south towards Amboseli, stopping along scenic routes and for lunch. The long journey crosses the Rift Valley and passes Nairobi before entering the dry, open country below Kilimanjaro. It is mainly a travel day, but the changing landscapes show how varied Kenya is. Arrive in the evening at your lodge near Amboseli to rest before tomorrow's game drives.

Day 8

Amboseli National Park

Elephants beneath Kilimanjaro

A full day of game drives showcases the large numbers of animals that gather in Amboseli's swamps. Elephant and buffalo roam at the base of Kilimanjaro, and cheetah, zebra and hyena are among the park's other residents. After a picnic lunch in the shade, continue with afternoon game viewing, watching for the summit to appear as the clouds clear.

Day 9

Amboseli → Arusha

Across the border to Arusha

After breakfast, leave Amboseli for the Namanga border, crossing the Maasai plains with Kilimanjaro often visible to the south. Complete the formalities and continue into Tanzania, passing the slopes of Mount Meru on the way to Arusha. Arrive in Arusha for the night at your hotel on a bed-and-breakfast basis, ready for the Tanzanian half of the journey and the Ngorongoro Crater the next day.

Day 10

Arusha → Ngorongoro Crater

Six hours in the crater

After breakfast, take a packed lunch and descend 600 metres into the Ngorongoro Crater for a game drive of up to six hours. Its savannah, forest and highland slopes support a high concentration of wildlife, from endangered black rhino and big cats to zebra, buffalo, eland, warthog, hippo and elephant. Dinner and overnight at your lodge.

Day 11

Ngorongoro → Serengeti National Park

Olduvai Gorge and the plains

After breakfast, head to the Serengeti via Olduvai Gorge, where the optional museum visit tells the story of early human discoveries. Descending from the highlands, the grassland opens out into the Serengeti's famous plains. Enter Serengeti National Park, widely known for the migration and home to elephant, cheetah, lion, giraffe and many birds, arriving at your lodge for dinner.

Day 12

Serengeti National Park

A full, unhurried day

A full day in the Serengeti gives time to explore and relax. Leave early with picnic lunches for the plains, where the migration moves through the year and lion, leopard, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, warthog and serval cat live year-round. There is no need to hurry: your guide can linger at sightings and explore the kopjes and river valleys. Return to your lodge in the evening.

Day 13

Serengeti → Lake Manyara

A final Serengeti drive

Take your final game drive in Serengeti National Park, a last chance to watch the plains' big cats and grazing herds. Then travel to Lake Manyara with lunch on the way, crossing the Ngorongoro highlands and descending the Rift Valley escarpment towards the lake. Arrive in the afternoon at your lodge for the night, with the park's forest and lakeshore waiting in the morning.

Day 14

Lake Manyara → Arusha

A last park before Arusha

After an early breakfast, take a game drive in Lake Manyara National Park, where the groundwater forest supports elephant herds, baboon troops, giraffe and hippo, and flamingos may gather on the lake. The park is known for its tree-climbing lions and hot springs. Afterwards, drive to Arusha, where the safari ends, after fourteen days that linked Kenya's finest parks with northern Tanzania.
