Day 1

Arusha → Tarangire

Meet the group, then baobab country

After a safari briefing in Arusha, meet your guide and fellow travellers, then leave with picnic lunches for Tarangire National Park and spend the afternoon on a game drive. Tarangire is known for large elephant herds, drawn by the Tarangire River, which also attracts lion, cheetah, buffalo, impala, greater and lesser kudu, gazelle, giraffe and eland. More than 500 bird species have been recorded among the park's baobabs and swamps.

Day 2

Tarangire → Lake Manyara

Groundwater forest beneath the escarpment

After breakfast, travel to Lake Manyara National Park, with lunch on the way, for an afternoon game drive. Lake Manyara is one of Tanzania's most dramatically located parks, sheltered beneath the Rift Valley escarpment; its groundwater forest is fed by springs below the escarpment wall. Look for its tree-climbing lions, elephant herds, baboon troops and the flamingos that sometimes gather on the lake.

Day 3

Lake Manyara → Ngorongoro

Up to the crater highlands

Leave Lake Manyara and climb the Rift Valley escarpment to the Ngorongoro highlands, the gateway to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The road climbs into cooler, forested country around the crater rim, a change from the lakeshore below. Arrive in the evening for dinner. Tomorrow's descent is the highlight of the safari: the crater floor supports almost every large animal found in the region except giraffe, including black rhino, lion, buffalo, zebra and spotted hyena.

Day 4

Ngorongoro Crater → Arusha

Six hours in the crater

After breakfast at camp, descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a game drive of up to six hours, the limit set by the authorities. The crater is often described as one of the natural wonders of Africa, supporting thousands of animals in a single, enclosed landscape. Enjoy a picnic lunch, then ascend to the rim and drive back to Arusha for drop-off at your hotel.
