Day 1

Nairobi → Lake Nakuru

Into the Rift Valley

Leave the bustle of Nairobi behind and travel through Kenyan highland scenery to Lake Nakuru National Park for an afternoon game drive. The park is known for its birdlife and as a rhino sanctuary, protecting both black and white rhino as well as Rothschild's giraffe. Its euphorbia forest and yellow acacia woodland make it one of East Africa's most picturesque parks, and tree-climbing lions are sometimes found here.

Day 2

Lake Nakuru → Maasai Mara

West to the Big Five plains

After breakfast, head west for the Maasai Mara National Reserve, climbing out of the Rift Valley through farmland and Maasai country before the land opens into grassland. The Mara is famous for its great herds of wild game; almost every large animal found in Kenya, including the Big Five, occurs here. Arrive for lunch, followed by an afternoon game drive across the vast plains in search of the reserve's resident wildlife.

Day 3

Maasai Mara National Reserve

Long drives and a riverside picnic

An optional balloon flight can be arranged at extra cost. After breakfast, leave at around 8am with picnic lunches for long game drives. The Mara holds one of Africa's highest concentrations of wildlife, on savannah that stretches beyond the horizon. Your guide will bring you close to the park's highlights, perhaps reaching the Mara River, a crossing point for migrating herds in season.

Day 4

Maasai Mara → Serengeti National Park

Across the border into Tanzania

After an early breakfast and a last game drive, travel to the Isebania border and cross into Tanzania, completing immigration formalities on the way. Continue to the Serengeti plains — the southern continuation of the same ecosystem, where the grassland simply rolls on beyond the border. Depending on your arrival time, set out on a game drive or enjoy a short walk near camp. Crossing between two famous parks in one day is a highlight of this route.

Day 5

Serengeti National Park

A full day in the majestic plains

An optional balloon flight can start the day (pre-arranged, extra cost). Leave camp early with picnic lunches for a full day on the plains. The Serengeti's migration moves through the ecosystem over the year following the rains, while lion, leopard, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, warthog and serval cat are present year-round. Spending the whole day in the park lets your guide explore kopjes, river valleys and open grassland.

Day 6

Serengeti → Ngorongoro Crater

To the crater highlands

After breakfast, take one last game drive to watch the Serengeti's wildlife interactions, from grazing herds to the predators that follow them. Then head east for the Ngorongoro highlands with lunch on the way, climbing from open plains into cool, forested hills around the crater. Arrive in the evening and check in for dinner and the night, ready to descend to the crater floor in the morning.

Day 7

Ngorongoro Crater → Arusha

Six hours in the crater

After breakfast, take a packed lunch and descend 600 metres into the Ngorongoro Crater for a game drive of up to six hours. The crater's woodland, grassland and swamps support endangered black rhino, big cats, zebra, buffalo, eland, warthog, hippo and elephant, all within the caldera's steep walls. Afterwards, drive to Arusha for drop-off at your hotel, ending a week that crossed from Kenya's Rift Valley to northern Tanzania.
