Day 1

Nairobi → Ol Pejeta Conservancy

Highlands to the Laikipia plateau

After breakfast, leave Nairobi and drive through the fertile central highlands on the flanks of Mount Kenya before descending onto the open bushland of Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Arrive for lunch. The conservancy protects a range of habitats and all of the Big Five, and it is the home of the last two northern white rhinos. It also has a sanctuary for rescued chimpanzees. An afternoon game drive explores the conservancy.

Day 2

Ol Pejeta → Lake Nakuru

Morning drive and Thomson's Falls

Enjoy a morning game drive after breakfast, then head for Lake Nakuru via Thomson's Falls, where the river plunges over a cliff near Nyahururu. Arrive in time for a hot lunch. Lake Nakuru's shoreline can be covered with flamingos, and over 400 bird species — including grebes, avocets, pelicans and cormorants — have been recorded here. Black and white rhino, hyena, zebra, lion, impala and Rothschild's giraffe also live in the park.

Day 3

Lake Nakuru → Maasai Mara

Across the Rift Valley floor

Start with a morning drive through Lake Nakuru's scenic ridges and bushy grassland, then cross the floor of the Great Rift Valley to the Maasai Mara, with lunch on the way. After lunch, go out on an evening game drive across the Maasai plains, where the abundance of wildlife gives a sense of the African safari at its best.

Day 4

Maasai Mara National Reserve

A day among the big cats

Spend a whole day exploring the Mara's vast plains. Cheetah, elephant, buffalo and zebra are often prominent, while antelope, warthog and wildebeest are present in large numbers. The Mara has one of the highest concentrations of wildlife per square kilometre in the region. After a picnic lunch, venture on towards the Mara River, with its crocodiles and hippos and, in season, migrating herds.

Day 5

Maasai Mara → Nairobi

One last look at the plains

After breakfast, check out and take a short game drive for a last chance to spot wildlife on the Mara's grassland, perhaps a lion pride resting in the shade or elephants moving towards water. Leave the Mara via Narok and climb back up the Rift Valley escarpment, arriving in Nairobi in the evening for drop-off at your hotel or a transfer to the airport. The trip ends after three very different parks in five days.
