Day 1

Nairobi → Amboseli

South to elephant country

Leave Nairobi for the drive south to Amboseli National Park, crossing open Maasai rangeland where cattle and occasional wildlife share the plains. Arrive at your lodge for lunch and head out for an afternoon game drive, looking for elephant families among the swamps and, on clear days, Kilimanjaro's summit above the plains. It is a gentle start that sets the tone for a week of contrasting Kenyan parks.

Day 2

Amboseli National Park

A day in the swamps and plains

Explore Amboseli throughout the day, with a picnic lunch in the park. The spring-fed swamps are a magnet for elephant, buffalo and hippo, and the open ground suits zebra, wildebeest and gazelle. Lion, cheetah and hyena are also present, so your guide will watch for signs of predators. Observation Hill offers a panoramic view over the swamps and plains, and a chance to stretch your legs above the park.

Day 3

Amboseli → Lake Naivasha

North to the Rift Valley

After a morning game drive, drive north past Nairobi and down into the Great Rift Valley to Lake Naivasha. The descent into the valley reveals wide views of escarpments and volcanic hills. The freshwater lake is ringed by papyrus and acacia woodland and is home to hippos and a wealth of birdlife. Settle in for a relaxed evening by the lake after the longest drive of the week.

Day 4

Lake Naivasha → Lake Nakuru

Hippos by boat, rhinos by road

Spend the morning at Lake Naivasha, with an optional boat ride to see hippos and fish eagles or a visit to nearby Hell's Gate. Then continue the short distance to Lake Nakuru National Park for an afternoon game drive. The park protects black and white rhino and has recorded over 400 bird species, with buffalo and Rothschild's giraffe often seen in the woodland near the shore.

Day 5

Lake Nakuru → Maasai Mara

Morning game drive and the drive west

Take an early game drive in Lake Nakuru, looking for rhinos, buffalo, waterbuck and Rothschild's giraffe among the acacia woodland, then drive west to the Maasai Mara. The route climbs out of the Rift Valley and crosses farmland and Maasai country before reaching the reserve. Arrive at your lodge in time for an evening game drive across the grassland, when lions often begin to stir.

Day 6

Maasai Mara National Reserve

A full day on the Mara

A full day in the reserve allows your guide to explore widely, from the open plains where lions and cheetah hunt to the Mara River with its hippos and crocodiles. Between July and October, migration herds may gather near the river, depending on the rains. Lunch is a picnic in the bush, so there is no need to return to the lodge until the light begins to fade.

Day 7

Maasai Mara → Nairobi

Morning drive and the return

Head out on a final early game drive, a last chance to watch the Mara come alive in the morning light and to look for any animals that eluded you. Return to the lodge for breakfast, then drive back to Nairobi through Narok and up the Rift Valley escarpment, arriving for drop-off at your hotel or the airport. The week ends after four of Kenya's best-known parks.
