Day 1

Nairobi → Maasai Mara

The road to the Mara

The safari starts at 8.30am with a pick-up from the airport, your hotel or residence, and a short stop at the office before departure. Drive via the Great Rift Valley viewpoint and Narok town, where lunch is taken, then continue into the Maasai Mara. On arrival, set out on a first game drive with your driver-guide, tracking the plains game and birdlife that make this reserve so rewarding.

Day 2

Maasai Mara National Reserve

Rolling grassland and hippo pools

Today is a full day in the reserve. The Mara's scenery is classic East Africa: savannah grassland over undulating hills, cut by rivers and dotted with acacia. An extensive network of tracks allows close-range viewing and photography. Break for a picnic lunch beside a hippo pool, looking out for hippos and crocodiles, then continue until about 5pm. An early hot-air balloon flight can be arranged in advance at extra cost.

Day 3

Maasai Mara → Lake Nakuru

Morning drive and the Rift Valley

Begin with an early game drive while predators are most active, then return to camp for breakfast. Leave the Mara region for Nakuru with lunch on the way, enjoying views of Mount Longonot and Lake Naivasha from the main highway. The route climbs out of the reserve's grasslands and crosses the Rift Valley, where farmland, escarpments and extinct volcanoes line the road. Arrive at Lake Nakuru in the evening for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 4

Lake Nakuru → Lake Naivasha

A bird lover's paradise

After breakfast, head into Lake Nakuru National Park for an extensive game drive. More than 400 bird species have been recorded here, and flamingos colour the shoreline when conditions suit them. The park protects both black and white rhino, and lions sometimes rest in the acacia branches. Antelope, giraffe and zebra graze the grassland. Exit the park for lunch en route to Lake Naivasha, where the evening is yours to relax.

Day 5

Lake Naivasha → Amboseli

Gorges by bike, then elephant country

Early breakfast, then visit Hell's Gate National Park, where you can cycle or walk among the animals — a rare opportunity in Kenya. Rock climbing and hikes through the gorges are also possible. You can cap the morning with an optional boat ride on Lake Naivasha to see hippos. Afterwards, drive south to Amboseli National Park, with lunch on the way, arriving at camp in the evening.

Day 6

Amboseli National Park

Swamps, herds and the great mountain

Enjoy a full day of game drives in Amboseli, tracking the large numbers of wildlife that gather in the park's swamps. Elephant and buffalo move across the plains at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro, and cheetah, zebra and hyena are among the other animals you may encounter. After a picnic lunch in the shade, continue with the afternoon drive. When the clouds clear in the evening, the snow-capped summit makes a spectacular backdrop.

Day 7

Amboseli → Nairobi

Final drive and farewell

Wake early for a last game drive across Amboseli's plains, a final chance to watch elephant families and look for Kilimanjaro before the clouds gather. Return to camp for breakfast. Drive back to Nairobi, or continue towards Mombasa for a beach holiday: the team can drop you at Emali for road transport to the coast, or at the airport for a connecting flight. It is a relaxed end to a week that covered four of Kenya's classic parks.
