Day 1

Nairobi → Amboseli

First game drive on the flat plains

Pick-up from your Nairobi hotel at 8.30am and drive south to Amboseli National Park, crossing open Maasai rangeland and arriving for lunch. The afternoon's game drive is easy on these flat plains, where elephant herds roam and gazelle, giraffe, cheetah and lion prides are often part of the scene. When the clouds lift, Kilimanjaro rises above the park. Game viewing continues until early evening.

Day 2

Amboseli → Lake Manyara

Across the Namanga border

After an early game drive, drive to the Namanga border, where your Tanzania guide meets you for the onward journey to Lake Manyara. Arrive in time for lunch, then head into the park. Flamingos may crowd the soda lake, and the park is known for its tree-climbing lions, elephants, giraffe, zebra, waterbuck and baboons, as well as smaller species such as dik-dik and klipspringer.

Day 3

Lake Manyara → Serengeti National Park

Via Olduvai Gorge to the plains

After breakfast, climb into the Ngorongoro highlands and travel to the Serengeti via Olduvai Gorge, where some of the earliest human remains were found — the museum visit is optional. Descending onto the plains, the land opens into grassland that seems to stretch without end. Enter the Serengeti, widely known for the migration, and home year-round to elephant, cheetah, lion, giraffe and a wealth of birds.

Day 4

Serengeti National Park

A full day on the Serengeti

Leave early with picnic lunches for a full day in the park. The migration flows across the ecosystem through the year, following the rains, while the Serengeti's residents — lion, leopard, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, warthog and serval cat — are present in every season. With the whole day available, your guide can explore the kopjes and river valleys where big cats often rest.

Day 5

Serengeti → Ngorongoro

Final Serengeti drive to the crater

After breakfast, enjoy your final game drive in the Serengeti, a last chance to watch the plains' predators and grazing herds. Then depart for the Ngorongoro highlands with lunch on the way, climbing from grassland into the cool, forested country around the crater. You arrive in the afternoon for the night, with the crater descent planned for the next morning.

Day 6

Ngorongoro Crater → Arusha

Six hours in the caldera

Take a packed lunch and descend 600 metres into the Ngorongoro Crater for a game drive of up to six hours. The crater's woodland, grassland and swamps support endangered black rhino, big cats, zebra, buffalo, eland, warthog, hippo and elephant, making it one of Africa's most rewarding game drives. Later, climb out of the caldera and drive to Arusha for the night on a bed-and-breakfast basis.

Day 7

Arusha → Taita Hills

A waterhole lodge in Kenya

Leave Arusha in the morning and drive to the Taveta border, then continue into Kenya's Taita Hills area for lunch, passing the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro along the way. Your lodge overlooks a waterhole where animals come to drink, giving close views and excellent photography without leaving the lodge. Afternoon game viewing in the sanctuary is followed by dinner and the night.

Day 8

Taita Hills → Mombasa or Nairobi

An early drive and onward travel

Take an early morning game drive before breakfast, when elephants and plains game often visit the waterholes of the Taita Hills sanctuary. Afterwards, continue to Mombasa, arriving at your hotel around lunchtime for time on the coast, or drive back to Nairobi, arriving in the evening. The route closes an eight-day loop that took in Amboseli, northern Tanzania and the Taita Hills.
