Day 1

Nairobi → Amboseli

South to the land of giants

Leave Nairobi and drive south across the Athi plains towards the Tanzanian border, where the land flattens into the dusty basin of Amboseli National Park. The journey takes you past Maasai grazing country and small trading centres before the park's swamps come into view. Arrive at your camp in time to settle in for dinner, with the option of a visit to the local community if you would like to learn more about the area.

Day 2

Amboseli National Park

A full day beneath Kilimanjaro

Spend the whole day exploring Amboseli with a picnic lunch in the park. The permanent swamps, fed by snowmelt from Kilimanjaro, draw elephant families, buffalo and hippo, while the open plains are good country for zebra, wildebeest, giraffe and the predators that follow them, including lion, cheetah and hyena. Birdlife around the wetlands is rich. In the late afternoon, when the clouds often clear, look for Africa's highest mountain rising above the herds.

Day 3

Amboseli → Nairobi

Early light and the road home

Head out for an early game drive while the air is cool and animals are active, then return to camp for a full breakfast. Afterwards, check out and drive back to Nairobi. If you are continuing to the coast, you can instead be dropped at Emali to connect with onward transport towards Mombasa or Malindi for a beach extension.
