Day 1

Nairobi → Maasai Mara

Escarpment views and a sundowner drive

Leave Nairobi after a hotel pick-up and follow the road down the Rift Valley escarpment, stopping at a viewpoint for photographs of the valley floor. In Narok you can pick up snacks or a local SIM card before the final stretch into Maasai country. After lunch at camp, head out on a sundowner game drive that introduces the Mara plains and their cast of residents, from zebra and topi to the predators that follow them.

Day 2

Maasai Mara National Reserve

The varied world of the Mara

A full day of game viewing takes you deep into the reserve. The Mara's open savannah makes wildlife watching rewarding, with lion prides, elephant herds, buffalo, giraffe and many antelope species present year-round. Following the network of tracks, you may reach the Mara River, where hippos and crocodiles are resident and, in the migration season, herds sometimes gather to cross. Lunch is taken in the bush before the afternoon drive.

Day 3

Maasai Mara → Lake Nakuru

From the plains to the lakes

After breakfast there is an optional cultural visit to a Maasai village. Then leave the Mara region and drive to Nakuru, with lunch on the way and views towards Lake Naivasha from the highway. The drive crosses farmland and the Rift Valley floor, a reminder of how varied Kenya's landscapes are within a single day. Arrive in the evening for dinner and a well-earned rest, with the rhino sanctuary of Lake Nakuru waiting in the morning.

Day 4

Lake Nakuru → Amboseli

Birdlife at dawn, elephants by dusk

Start with a game drive in Lake Nakuru National Park, known for its birdlife and for protecting both black and white rhino. Tree-climbing lions are sometimes found in the park's acacias, and buffalo and zebra graze the shoreline. After the drive, begin the long journey south to Amboseli, with a hot lunch on the way and a stop above the Rift Valley. Arrive at camp near Amboseli in the evening.

Day 5

Amboseli National Park

Elephants against Kilimanjaro

Spend a full day on game drives in Amboseli National Park. Its swamps draw large numbers of animals, and it is one of the best places in Africa to watch elephant families at close range, often with Kilimanjaro behind them. Buffalo, zebra, hyena and cheetah may also be found on the open plains. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the shade before an afternoon drive, and look for the mountain's snow-capped summit when the evening clouds clear.

Day 6

Amboseli → Nairobi

Morning drive and onward journey

Head out early for a final game drive, when elephants often move between the swamps and the plains and the light over Kilimanjaro can be at its clearest. Return to camp for a hot breakfast. Afterwards, drive back to Nairobi through the dry country of the southern Rift. Travellers continuing to the coast can be dropped at Emali to board transport to Mombasa, or at the airport for a connecting flight.
