Day 1

Nairobi → Maasai Mara

West to Kenya's finest reserve

An early pick-up in Nairobi sets you on the road west, with scenic stops along the Rift Valley and lunch on the way. Arrive in the Maasai Mara in time for a sundowner game drive across the plains. The Mara supports large numbers of elephant, buffalo and plains game, and lion prides and cheetah coalitions hunt across the grassland. From about July to October, migrating wildebeest and zebra may arrive from the Serengeti, adding to the resident wildlife.

Day 2

Maasai Mara National Reserve

Tracking the Mara's residents

Breakfast at camp, then head into the reserve for a full day of exploration. Elephant herds graze the long grass while zebra and gazelle move in loose groups. As the day warms, lions often seek shade after the night's hunting, and cheetah may be seen scanning from termite mounds. The reserve's leopards are elusive, but the riverine woodland is good habitat. Between July and October, keep watch at the Mara River, where the herds sometimes gather to cross.

Day 3

Maasai Mara → Lake Nakuru

Maasai culture and the Rift Valley

After an early breakfast there is the chance to visit a Maasai village and hear about the community's way of life. Then leave the Mara and drive east towards Lake Nakuru, with wide views across the Rift Valley along the way. The route passes farmland, escarpments and distant volcanic peaks before you reach Nakuru town in time for dinner and a restful night after the drive.

Day 4

Lake Nakuru → Nairobi

Flamingos, rhinos and the return

Spend the morning in Lake Nakuru National Park, one of Kenya's most attractive parks. The soda lake's shoreline is known for flamingos when water levels suit them, and more than 400 bird species have been recorded here. The park is also a sanctuary for both black and white rhino, and you may find Rothschild's giraffe, buffalo and zebra among the acacia woodland. Leave the park after the game drive and head back to Nairobi, with lunch on the way.
