Day 1

Nairobi → Maasai Mara

An orientation on the plains

After a hotel pick-up, your guide gives a short briefing before the drive west. The first stop is the Rift Valley viewpoint, introducing Kenya's richly diverse landscapes. Continue through Narok to the Maasai Mara, arriving for a hot lunch. An afternoon game drive orients you to the wildlife of the reserve — which has the highest concentration of animals of any park in Kenya — until the sun goes down.

Day 2

Maasai Mara National Reserve

A whole day in big-cat country

Spend the entire day exploring the Mara's plains. Cheetah, elephant, buffalo and zebra often dominate the scene, while antelope, warthog and wildebeest are present in large numbers. Enjoy a picnic lunch, then continue towards the Mara River, home to crocodiles and hippos and the famous crossing point for migrating herds between July and October, depending on the rains.

Day 3

Maasai Mara → Lake Nakuru

A bird paradise and rhino sanctuary

After an early breakfast, there is an optional visit to a Maasai village. Then leave the Mara and continue to Lake Nakuru, one of Kenya's most beautiful parks, widely known for its birdlife and as a rhino sanctuary. Arrive in the evening, with time for a short game drive if the light allows, followed by a relaxing evening.

Day 4

Lake Nakuru → Amboseli

Cliff-top views and the long road south

Start with an extensive game drive in Lake Nakuru National Park. The alkaline lake can host large numbers of flamingos, and over 400 bird species have been recorded. The park's cliff-top viewpoints overlook grassland where lion, waterbuck, reedbuck, warthog and buffalo roam, and it is one of the few places in Kenya where both white and black rhino can be seen. Then drive south via Nairobi to Amboseli, arriving in the evening.

Day 5

Amboseli National Park

Panoramas and elephant families

Head into the park after breakfast for a full day of game viewing. Large elephant herds walk slowly against the backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro, buffalo bathe in the swamps and giraffe feed on the treetops. Zebra, warthog and lion are also found here. After a picnic lunch in the shade, continue exploring this semi-arid park. In the evening, when the clouds open, Kilimanjaro's summit often appears.

Day 6

Amboseli → Tsavo West

Springs, lava flows and lookouts

After an early breakfast and a short game drive, continue to Tsavo West National Park, known for the clear pools of Mzima Springs and its rugged scenery. Acacia woodland, rocky ridges and lookouts such as Poacher's Lookout give views over open grassland. Tsavo's elephants are often red with dust, and cheetah, buffalo and leopard live here too.

Day 7

Tsavo West → Nairobi or the coast

Dawn drive and onward travel

Take an early morning game drive before returning to the lodge for a hot breakfast; Tsavo West's volcanic hills and acacia bush are at their most atmospheric in the soft early light, and elephants are often on the move. Then check out and either continue to the coast for a beach holiday or drive back to Nairobi for drop-off at your hotel. It is a relaxed finish to a week that covered four contrasting Kenyan parks.
